Getting a job takes tapping into common sense. If you don’t take your time, you rush through your applications and don’t make it to your interviews, you can plan on being without a job until you get your act together.

If, however, you’re serious about getting a job, take comfort in knowing that the economy isn’t quite as rough as a lot of people make it out to be, and there are jobs out there that you can find employment through.

It’s All about Local Connections

If you have a certain area that you would like to work in, then it makes all the sense in the world to start your job search there. Do you have a certain company in mind? If so, simply walk in and ask for an application. Also, make sure to speak with the hiring manager.

If you don’t have a specific company or position picked out, then go to different businesses and ask if they are hiring. Chances are, even if some of them aren’t hiring they’ll be able to point in you the direction of the companies that are.

People who live and work in the community where you want to work will likely have valuable connections with the people who do the hiring, so make sure you take part in community events. From festivals to business conferences and more, each of these activities should be treated as networking tools.

Most of all, remember to have patience. When you fill out your applications, don’t leave any parts blank. And also make sure to tailer your resume to fit each position you’re applying to. You don’t want to send in a resume that was created to appeal to a "welding" position when you’re trying to land a job as a "concrete" worker.

Getting a job is only as difficult as you make it out to be. Remember, sometimes, you have to start out at the bottom and work your way up. And also keep in mind that local connections can be of the utmost value.
